S-Cube and Petrobras Featured on AWS Blog for Breakthrough Seismic Imaging Results

S-Cube is thrilled to announce the publication of a new technical case study on the official AWS Blog, co-authored by our team members alongside experts from Petrobras and AWS. The article, titled "Maximizing seismic insights: how Petrobras uses S-Cube’s cloud native XWI solution built on AWS Graviton," details a groundbreaking collaboration that redefines the standards for large-scale seismic processing.

The Challenge: The Immense Scale of Modern Seismic Imaging
Full Waveform Inversion (FWI) is the algorithm of choice for building highly accurate models of the subsurface, but it requires enormous computational power. As modern seismic acquisition generates denser data, the demand for processing power has grown by 10-100 times, pushing traditional on-premises hardware to its limits.
The Solution: S-Cube's XWI™ on the Cloud
In a close collaboration with Petrobras, we deployed our cloud-native XWI™ solution using the S-Cube Cloud (SCC) infrastructure. Built on AWS, SCC is purpose-built for HPC workloads. For this project, we leveraged hundreds of Amazon EC2 Spot Instances powered by AWS Graviton processors to efficiently process a massive 3.3 TB seismic dataset from the Santos Basin. Our unique architecture serves terabytes of data directly from Amazon S3, eliminating the need for costly parallel file systems.
The results demonstrate the power of combining S-Cube’s advanced algorithms with the elasticity of the cloud. As noted by our partner at Petrobras:
“Using the scalable environment of AWS through S-Cube’s XWI software and SCC infrastructure allowed us to process our seismic imaging workflows efficiently, paying only for the resources we use. This flexibility accelerates data-driven decisions and helps us optimize costs.” – Gustavo Catão Alves, Geophysical Advisor, Petrobras
This project confirms that S-Cube's cloud-native FWI solution provides a powerful, cost-effective, and scalable alternative to traditional methods, producing high-fidelity results even in the most complex geological settings.
